John Staley has a wide range of experience in both Finance and ICT and has worked in South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Kenya. He was the CEO of Credit Indemnity (Pty) Ltd (a subsidiary of African Bank Investment Limited), one of the largest un-secured micro-lending companies in South Africa and worked with Equity Bank in 2003/2004 as Chief Operations Officer and again from 2009 to 2017, where his last position was Chief Officer – Finance, Innovation, and Technology. John was headhunted by Fairfax Insurance of Canada to join their African Team and he worked with Fairfax Africa until January 2019. John is currently on sabbatical.
John has been involved with Mobile Financial Service since 1999, and has was the driving force behind Equity Banks movement into this space since 2003, when Equity first considered using third parties to provide cash in and cash out services via agents using the mobile phone. Equity Bank is now one of the leading banks in Mobile Financial Services.
He has a BSc in Physics from the University of Natal, South Africa, and an MSc in Applied and Computational Mathematics from the University of the Witwatersrand. He went on to obtain a BCommpt (Honours) degree from the University of South Africa before qualifying as a Chartered Accountant (SA) in 1996.
